Ways to Support Seniors Living in Rented Flats in Singapore

By Impact Radar Editorial

Rental blocks are a Singapore success story and a Singapore challenge at the same time. They have kept a roof over tens of thousands of low-income households who would otherwise have been priced out. They also concentrate, on a few floors of a few blocks, many of the risk factors that accelerate cognitive decline in older age.

The rental-block context

A senior living alone in a two-room rental unit is not hard to find in Bukit Merah, Jalan Kukoh, or Redhill. She may have outlived her spouse and siblings. Her children, if she has any, live elsewhere.

What community-based outreach actually looks like

Start with a home visit, not a flyer. Use the spaces that already exist — void decks, common rooms. Layer health checks onto social activities. Keep groups small. Pair programmes with befrienders.

How you can help

Donations to our Bukit Merah Programme flow through PCS as the IPC partner and qualify for the 250% Singapore tax deduction. Volunteers can sign up via our Get Involved form. [DRAFT]
