Top Challenges for Frail Seniors in Singapore

By Impact Radar Editorial

Frailty is a clinical state, not a moral one. Understanding it matters because it changes what good eldercare looks like.

Defining frailty

The Fried frailty phenotype is the most widely used clinical framework. A senior is frail if she meets three or more of: unintended weight loss, exhaustion, weakness, slow walking speed, low physical activity. In Singapore, 6–10% of community-dwelling older adults are frail; another 40%+ are pre-frail.

Three compounding challenges

Mobility shrinks the world. Multiple chronic conditions are exhausting to coordinate. Isolation accelerates cognitive decline.

Why in-home and small-group formats matter

They come to the senior, not the other way around. Sessions are short and seated by default. A trained nurse is present or on call. Family caregivers are briefed at handover.
